| | Release. Allowing enough time for the first 3 is critical to ensuring a successful transition into tooling and product launch. Accelerating the process can result in costly errors, tooling modifications, and delays. We enjoy a challenge but also no-quote projects that have not allowed the necessary time for success.
Reverse-Engineering
Several of our projects have involved reverse-engineering existing parts that are either obsolete or have no associated tooling, CAD files, or documentation. Since the geometry and function are already defined, these projects typically do not require as much time to complete. The Telecom industry refurbishes old legacy systems that are easier to repair rather than replace, and contract manufacturers who do this and similar work need to duplicate broken and missing parts.
(re)-Design for Manufacturing
About 25% of our projects involve re-designing products that were released for tooling, but were not designed properly for manufacturing. This is especially true for injection molded products. We work with several injection molders who receive "complete" tooling files that are poorly designed and simply cannot be manufactured. Most of these projects involve rebuilding the parts properly from scratch and using the original design as a guide.
